FedEx Freight expanded its service center in Butte, Mont., to a 65-door facility to make it a less-than-truckload hub in the Northwest.

“Butte is a key location in our network to serve the needs of our customers,” Michael Zanolli, vice president of regional operations, told the local NBC affiliate in Butte.

FedEx Freight completed reengineering its LTL network early this year, merging its regional network with the previously separate system of FedEx National LTL. With about $4.4 billion in revenue in 2010, FedEx Freight is the largest LTL carrier in the U.S., according to data supplied by SJ Consulting Group, Pittsburgh.

The company reported an operating profit of $42 million on $1.3 billion in revenue in its quarter that ended Aug. 31, compared with a $16 million year-ago loss.
